Pack Like a Pro!

Is packing your bag the most frustrating part of preparing for your vacation? Follow a few easy tips that will have you packing like a pro!

1. Roll your clothes. When you roll clothes, they take up less space than when you fold them. The best items to roll are skirts and pants.

2. Use layers of tissue paper for delicate items such as evening clothes. Items rolled in tissue paper tend to get less wrinkled.

3. Don’t overpack. This makes it more difficult for security screeners at the airlines to go through your bag. If they have to remove items, you run the risk of having something damaged.

4. If you’re flying, place items such as toiletries (in the approved 3 oz. size) in plastic bags for easy handling.

5. Traveling as a pair or group? Each person should place a change of clothes in someone else’s bag, in case their luggage is lost.

6. When packing a backpack, place the heavier items, or things such as dirty clothing on the bottom, and the lightest items should go on top.

7. Pack medication, paperwork and one change of clothes in a carry-on bag. Again, this saves you from being stranded without the essentials if your checked bags are lost or delayed.

8. Pack shoes in shoe bags. This keeps other items in your suitcase from getting dirty, and keeps the shoes from getting scuffed.

9. If you are flying, leave about a half-inch of space in bottles of liquid. This will keep the bottles from bursting due to changes in cabin pressure on the plane.

10. Plan on doing a lot of shopping while on vacation? Then pack one smaller suitcase and nest it inside a larger one. You can put your purchases inside the larger suitcase for the return trip.

Tips for Traveling with Children

If you are traveling with children, you are probably ready to pull hair out before you even get started on the actual traveling portion of the ordeal. Luckily, there are some things that you can do to get a handle on your travel without your children becoming bored and stressing you out worse.

First and foremost, fill a cheap mp3 player, CD player or tape recorder with books on tape to keep your children busy. You can record your own, check them out from the library or buy them from most book stores. These are a great distraction for your child and will keep them quiet and focused, especially during a long trip. Both young and old children will enjoy books on tape. You can also supply them with the actual book if you want, so they have pictures to look at while the book is being read to them.

Another tip is to bring a bag of brand new toys for the trip. New “loot” goes a long way on a car trip or plane ride. Bring a small bag of new toys with you for each trip, and pull the toys out one at a time. If you do this right, then this is an exercise that can last for the entire ride by keeping the children occupied. As one toy becomes boring or the children get distracted, just put it away and pull out something new. Brand new toys are typically better at distracting children during travel than toys that they are already familiar with.

If you cannot afford new toys for each trip, consider keeping toys packed away that you only bring out for traveling. Because your children will only play with them on car rides or plane rides, the toys will seem new and interesting again each time that you bring them out. You can also bring books or other new items that will grab their attention for a period of time. Just remember to bring several different toys or games because young children may become bored easily and require new challenges.

After all everyone that is traveling has a common goal to get to where they want with the least amount of stress and frustration possible. Since there is a common goal you’d assume no one is judging you for wearing your comfortable sweatpants and sweater on the plane but in fact what you wear can play a vital part in some aspects of traveling.

The majority of travelers will dress for comfort and ease of traveling. This doesn’t mean that you jump into the dirtiest pair of clothing you own and wear them on the plane. It does mean that you wear something that isn’t form fitting and tight, and allows for a lot of room to move around in. After all, you’ll be sitting in the same seat for hours on end so you’ll want to be comfortable.

Comfortable clothing is great if you want to stay with the seat that you purchased but what if you want to get upgraded to first class. Studies have been conducted on airlines that upgrade passengers to first class. In this study it suggested that airlines are more likely to upgrade a passenger that looks professional and are dressed in professional attire. So if you are looking to get a free upgrade, dress for success. While it won’t guarantee that you will get an upgrade it could be very helpful.

While the last thing a traveler needs is to worry about what they are wearing when traveling. Remember that if you dress in professional attire you’re chances of being upgraded increase ten fold. However, if you don’t get upgraded it could lead to a very uncomfortable plane ride to your destination.

It’s every traveler’s nightmare. You get off the plane, walk over to the baggage claim and you are left with nothing. No matter how many times that luggage carousel goes around and around, your luggage isn’t going to appear. Somewhere between point A and point B, your luggage took a detour and is now sitting miles away from where you are. Usually this type of scenario could ruin a whole vacation or business trip. However there are many helpful tips that a traveler could use to avoid allowing lost luggage to ruin a vacation.

The first tip is to not panic. Starting off a vacation in a panicked state will usually cause many other events and things throughout the vacation to go wrong. So if you find yourself with lost luggage; take a deep breath, calm down and then handle the situation with the airline. Most airlines, if they know where your luggage is, will try to get your luggage to you within 24 hours. They will even send it to your hotel so you don’t have to pick it up.

Another helpful tip is to utilize what resources you have. Inquire what items the hotel can provide you. Many hotels provide toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs and other products to those that might have forgotten to pack these items. Take advantage of what the hotels offer and pick up the items that you will need while on vacation. For items that cannot be obtained from the front desk of the hotel, make a quick stop to a local store. Many vacation hot spots have 24 hour stores where travelers can easily pick up essential items that might have been in that lost luggage. If you are unsure where to head to pick up these items, ask the front desk. They should be able to direct you in the right direction.

Next time you find your luggage lost remember to not panic. Just take some of these helpful tips in mind and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy a wonderful vacation because you successful avoided a vacation nightmare situation.
